Smithfield State High School was the recipient of this year’s Secondary School category award thanks to Year 12 students Trang Phan and Eva Williams, who developed a multimedia educational program to raise awareness of drug and alcohol issues in indigenous communities. The students were commissioned by Queensland Health, ATODS, Cairns to produce a touch screen application. Uses are able engage in multimedia content, such as video, audio, animation, games. The application is used at Croc Festivals throughout the state and many copies has also found their way into school libraries and HPE programs.

2007 Scholarship winners announced
We continue to offer a scholarship leading to a Certificate IV in the Arts – Multimedia. The Scholarship is available to one student in Year 11 and one student in Year 12. The Scholarship is to be used to pay all of the enrolment fees in ITQ (Quest) being offered at Smithfield High School for one year. The winners of this year’s scholarship are Trang Phan of Year 12 and Matthew Jackson of Year 11. There were several worthy applicants, making the selection of the recipient very difficult indeed.

New multimedia computers
New Dell computers featuring the latest chipsets, dual core processors, graphics card, 2GB RAM and high resolution, 19” LCD monitors are now online and used by Quest students in our multimedia lab.
New Software
Students enrolled in Quest always use the latest, industry standard software. Late last year we added Sony Sound Forge as our high end audio editing program.
USB flash drive
Students are strongly encouraged to use a USB drive for transferring files between school and home. Multimedia files are typically large and USB drives represent the most efficient way to transfer these files. As a new initiative this year, each Quest student is given a 2GB USB drive – big enough to back up all of their school work. The drive displays the Smithfield SHS logo.
